The Philippine LEGO® Users Group
“Building a community a brick at a time”
The Philippine LEGO® Users Group (PhLUG) is the country’s first LUG to be officially recognized was formally founded on December 12, 2012. Friends, Randy Protacio (Citizen Piper) and Stanley Lao (Manila Brick), over late night coffee, coined the idea in order to gather collectors and builders who have a passion for everything purely LEGO®.
Together with Filipino Adult Fans of LEGO (AFOLs), the simple Facebook group page has grown to over 400 members in a span of seven months with online members predominantly from the Philippines as well as overseas AFOLs from the United States, Europe and Asia.
In its first few months, PhLUG (pronounced as “Phil Lug”) has organized events and online initiatives that include MOC-building activities like: “Twelve Builds of Christmas”, “March MOC Madness”,”PhLUGInstaMOC” as well as community building activities like “Telephone/Pass the MOC”. All aimed at stimulating interest in original builds and teamwork among its members.
The group gained momentum immediately and had its first early morning membership meet up, later known as BRICKFast, at Krispy Kreme Bonifacio Global City in January 2012. From there, PhLUG organized publicly accessible events at: The Little Archers School Exhibit and LEGO® appreciation day and The Man of Steel Exhibit at the atrium of Lucky Chinatown Mall. Most notable of which is 2012’s biggest event: Iron Man 3 Brickxhibit, organized in partnership with the Gateway Mall (a major mall in the Philippines) where the group also had sold-out block screening for its growing membership. These three (3) events gave PhLUG eligibility to join the exclusive worldwide LUG network by having Randy Protacio as the country’s first LEGO® Ambassador.
Despite the sometimes prohibitive prices of LEGO in the country, PhLUG has successfully recruited a lot of TFOLs and AFOLs to rekindle the love for the brick via sharing and participating in the group’s events, The LUG has also successfully a strong Filipino LEGO community that breaks geographical boundaries by having organized memberships in other parts of the country like Davao, Cebu and Northern Luzon.
The Philippine LEGO® Users Group is committed to bringing the LEGO® hobby to more AFOLs by building a community a brick at a time.
